{"id":4030,"date":"2026-05-08T17:08:40","date_gmt":"2026-05-08T14:08:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one-ukraine.com\/?p=4030"},"modified":"2026-05-08T17:52:51","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T14:52:51","slug":"vyshyvanka-day-on-the-third-thursday-of-may","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one-ukraine.com\/index.php\/en\/2026\/05\/08\/vyshyvanka-day-on-the-third-thursday-of-may\/","title":{"rendered":"Vyshyvanka Day &#8211; on the third Thursday of May"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The Vyshyvanka Day is an international holiday, that we began to celebrate before two decades.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Everyone wishing to emphasize their Ukrainian heritage can wear an embroidered blouse.<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">On this day, Ukrainian folk traditions are to be preserved through ethnically embroidered clothing.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Such a blouse is much more than just fabric.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">It is like a symbol of identity, like a legacy that has lasted for generations.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The idea for Vyshyvanka Day originated in 2006 with Lesia Voroniuk, then a student at Chernivtsi National University (founded in 1875 as Franz Joseph University).<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">L. Voroniuk suggested that students choose a day to wear embroidered blouses together.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Initially, only a few students and some professors wore vyshyvanka (<span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"de\"> (in Ukrainian &#8211; \u0412\u0438\u0448\u0438\u0432\u0430\u043d\u043a\u0430<\/span>).<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">In the following years, however, the celebration developed into a nationwide Ukrainian event.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Colleagues from other universities, as well as libraries, schools, and kindergartens, participated.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Later, this idea attracted the Ukrainian diaspora worldwide and Ukrainian supporters.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The Vyshyvanka holiday was deliberately chosen for a weekday, not a weekend, to emphasize that the Vyshyvanka is &#8222;part of Ukrainian life and culture, not an ancient artifact.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Just as national costumes are still proudly worn at folk festivals all over the world, the Vyshyvanka is a vibrant part of contemporary life in Ukraine.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">It is worn not only on special occasions but also in everyday life as an expression of connection to one&#8217;s roots.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The fifth anniversary of this holiday in 2011 was particularly significant, as it marked the achievement of a Guinness World Record.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">More than 4,000 people wearing embroidered Vyshyvanka shirts gathered in Chernivtsi&#8217;s central square.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">That same year, a giant embroidered blouse (4 x 10 meters) was created for the main building of Chernivtsi University.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">In 2014, a competition was held for the best family photo in embroidered shirts.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Among the highlights were the results of the nationwide photo contest &#8222;My Family in Embroidered Shirts&#8221;
